47 of 50 Paint Studies MINDS EYE by Drew Brophy Dec 11 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This is #47 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.  Only 3 left to go!

TITLE: MIND’S EYE

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

What if we got it all wrong?  What if this biological organism we know as our bodies isn’t really us; what if it’s just a vessel; but our mind’s eye is like a spaceship; actually from somewhere else.

Maybe what we are seeing and creating is like a video game and our bodies are the avatar.

If you knew that this life is just an experience, how would it be different for you?

If you knew that the REAL you is at the controls somewhere, and that maybe the real you is choosing these experiences for you, how would that change the way you see things in your life?

This is #46 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.  Only 4 left to go!

TITLE: LIVING ON THE BEACH

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

Back when I lived on the North Shore of Hawaii, I was trying to make it as an artist.

Sometimes I couldn’t even afford a bus ride; times were tough.

But it was great living at Pipeline, surfing that break whenever it was good.  I remember thinking that if times ever got too bad, it wouldn’t matter, because I could just live on the beach, shower at the beach park, and surf every day.

This painting study is available – SOLD to Hugh, in Philly, PA!

TITLE: BANZAI PIPELINE, GREATEST SHOW ON SURF

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

This time of year, each year, they hold the Pipeline Masters Surf Contest on the North Shore of Oahu.

Pipeline is one of my favorite waves to surf. I used to live right in front of the break and surfed it every day.

It’s a critical wave, super dangerous, but so perfect. And as a spectator, it’s the best show on surf.

This painting study is available – SOLD to Aaron of Salem, OR.  It’s his first original piece of my work.

TITLE: JAWS (The Surf Spot)

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

I spent all day Sunday watching the Big Wave Jaws contest.  Many of my friends were surfing in the event.  Jaws is a place I’ve always wanted to surf.

Jaws is in Maui and it’s a heaving right tube that gets well over forty feet.

Yesterday they really pushed the limits of big wave surfing, once again.  Guys were paddling into some of the biggest waves ever paddled into.  It was exciting to watch.

This painting study is available – SOLD to Scott A of NV, a collector of my work that knows a good wave when he sees it.

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

There’s a bunch of swells coming, lining up across the Pacific.  I’m gathering all my surfboards and getting ready.

Now, the big waves are coming and El Nino begins.

41 of 50 Paint Studies WEST REEF by Drew Brophy Dec 5 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This is #41 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.  Only 9 left to go!

TITLE: West Reef

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

West reef is about a half a mile off shore in San Clemente. It only breaks when there’s a giant swell.

I get so excited when I see the waves breaking out there.  The long paddle out is always worth it.

The water is very clear and it’s like surfing over a giant aquarium; you get to see many different kinds of fish and sharks.

West Reef is also one of the rare spots you get to surf alone.

Now, the big waves are coming and El Nino begins!

This painting study is available – SOLD to Scott A. from Henderson, NV, a collector of my art who owns many pieces. Stoked!.

I was inspired to paint this after seeing the swell forecast for this week.  The Northern Pacific ocean is about to turn into a monster.

Huge waves are coming.

39 of 50 Paintings TAHITI REEF HOUSE by Drew Brophy Dec 3 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This is #39 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.

TITLE:  TAHITIAN REEF HUT

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

When I was in Tahiti a couple months ago, I paddled out to the contest scaffolding for the Billabong Pro, which sits on the reef right in front of the world famous surf break called Teahupoo.

How great would it be to live right there on the scaffolding?  You could spearfish off the edge and then surf out front.  If you needed something else you could paddle to shore, get on the bus and take it to town.  At night you could listen to the waves break while staring at the stars.  My dream life.
