“Drew, I bought your DVD and learned so much from it. I have had so much fun doing combo spray designs with paint pen designs but I would like to know any hints or techniques for doing smooth pinlines and borders along rails or to separate paint pen panels and sprayed areas. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and your talents – Bud Tatum”
These are great questions, Bud. When doing Combo Spray and Paint Pen Designs, you have 2 ways to go:
1.) Do the paint pen art first. When finsihed, spray the clear to seal it, and do what you normally would do to finish it. Once it’s dry, then tape it off with either frisket or 2″ tape, and then cut out the design, then you can spray paint around it. Pinlines can be added as a third step. Either tape them off and spray or do it by hand if you have a steady hand.
2.) Airbrush a board on the foam first. Once the board’s glassed, then paint over the glass with paint pens.
You can have a lot of fun with this. Send me photos of what you’ve done and I’ll post them!
Life is Good – Drew
P.S. Stay tuned for my next DVD coming out, just for surfboard painting. It’s called “THE PAINT SHOP – 12 WAYS TO PAINT A SURFBOARD”. The first segement will be available on itunes in about a month.
