Brophy Principal: Giving Art to Worthy Causes while Protecting the Value

It’s common for artists to be asked by various charities and not-for-charities (companies) to “DONATE” artwork or painting services for their cause.

Here are some benefits of giving art to charities:

1.)  You feel good about giving to a charity that you love & you get to help them further the cause

2.)  You may get media coverage (usually not)

3.)  You may gain new art collectors (this rarely happens, but it can)

Don’t do it for the write off - ACCORDING TO THE I.R.S. (more…)

Being the Expert - David Carson and You

del-mar-event-with-drew-and-sam-george80% of Success is Showing Up” Woody Allen

Are you ready to give a talk about your art to a hall filled with 5,000 people, who are there just to hear what you have to say?

Get ready, because it may be in your future.  And getting ready can take time, particularly if you aren’t fond of public speaking.

Having the ability to give live demonstrations or speeches about your art is an important tool.  Not only are you able to give back to the community, but you also position yourself as an expert in what you do.  And people are more likely to buy art from an expert. (more…)

Are you Fiercely Protecting your Copyrights?

(c) Drew Brophy

As an artist, or writer, or photographer, your creations are your BRAND.  YOU are your brand, and everything that you’ve ever written, painted, or created is an extension of your brand.
And all great freelancers know that you must fiercely protect your brand.

Much like Coca Cola would never allow someone to take their logo and bastardize it, (more…)

Should an Artist Charge More Than a Plumber?!

Could a Plumber do this?

Could a Plumber do this?

Artists, are you charging more than your plumber does?  I think you should.

We live in a historical home, built in 1926.  They didn’t have good plumbing back then….so we spend a lot on plumbers.  Typically, our plumber charges about $200.00 an hour, PLUS parts.  (Southern California’s not cheap!)

When I price out a small commissioned painting, (particularly surfboard paintings) many times Drew will question my quote, saying, (more…)

How To Find An Artist’s Agent?

spunk-brophy-21A commonly asked question I get from artists is:  “Will you represent me?”  Or, “How do I find an agent to represent me?”

My quick answer is this:  Consider representing yourself.  It’s tricky to find someone GOOD to represent your work.  (more…)

6 “in your face” Tips on Licensing Your Art

Licensing is a clever way to get paid for the same piece of art over and over again. This means, you paint it once and it continues to make money for you, even after you’re dead!

PERSONAL EXAMPLE: About 80% of our income comes from licensing Drew’s art. (See Sigg Bottle to your left). The image on the bottle titled “PURE JOY” was painted in 1998 and the original was sold to a collector from LA at an exhibit at The Surf Gallery in 98′. I think we sold that painting for about $500, but we’ve licensed the image for so many different products over the years, it’s earned us approximately $450,000 to date, and continues to be a popular, iconic image.

So, what do you need to do license your art? Click on the “more” link for our 6 tips: (more…)
