SURFED OUT is what it’s like on a surf day when the waves are so good, you surf all day. Finally, you get so hungry you have to come in and eat. Then, you pass out on the beach next to a fire. It’s the best feeling in the world, being Surfed Out.

This painting was a commission for Spencer, a nine year old surfing dynamo!

His mother commissioned this painting as a gift for him. Spencer’s been a longtime fan of mine, and I’ve painted a lot of surfboards for him and his brother and sister, all from a surfing family.

This artwork is available as a giclee print so you can put SURFED OUT on your wall, too. You can find it in my store here.

You can watch me paint SURFED OUT on The Paint Shop Episode 3 “Crusin’ to Santa Cruz” Full Episode in HD from The Paint Shop on Vimeo.

Everyone should have a Surfed Out day. Life is good – Drew

So Cal Magazine is geared towards travelers, and it aims to show the Southern California “extreme fun” way of life.

So Jim Kirkwood, the magazine’s Editor and founder, asked me to paint something that would show the fun lifestyle we live here in So Cal.

Most of the covers of So Cal Magazine usually are a beautiful photograph of a local spot or activity. But this time Jim really went “outside the box” by putting my colorful art on it.

I’m stoked when my clients aren’t afraid to do something different!

We went through the sketch process, and Jim was happy with the first sketch I sent him. (It’s awesome when everything goes that smooth…)

Coming up with the concept always takes the most time for me. Once I have the sketch nailed down, the painting part is easy – it’s just putting in the time, drinking Yerba Mate and listening to the same music over and over again until it’s done.

When the painting was finished, I dropped it off at my buddy Gary at Chroma Concepts and had it scanned, then sent the digital file over to So Cal Magazine.

THE WEDGE (c) Drew Brophy 36" x 24"

Then I framed the original painting so I could sell it.

The painting is named THE WEDGE, based on the famed surf spot in Newport Beach. The original painting is sized 36″ x 24″ on Canvas, painted with acrylics and paint pens.

THE WEDGE Giclee print on canvas is available for purchase in my Store Here

The original painting was purchased by Tim Smith, one of my regular collectors. Now, THE WEDGE will be joining NEPTUNE in it’s new home.

Life is Good – Drew

The Drew Brophy surfboard painting shown in this magazine is titled “Flying Fish” and was sold for $14,000 in a Surfrider Foundation New York auction.

This issue of Spin Magazine also has an insightful article on the elusive talent, Prince, and the making of his Purple Rain Movie back in 1984.

The most intriquing trait about Prince was that, even when he was a nobody, he knew what he was capable of. He never lost sight of the big picture with regards to his career, and he believed in his vision even when others didn’t. Because of that belief, he never stopped until he got what he wanted. In this article, that was getting the movie when not many people believed in it. Incidentally, the movie was a huge success for everyone involved.

We’ve put Purple Rain on our Netflix list – it’ll be great to watch again after all these years!
