I’m happy with how the painting turned out.

I have 10-15 more vans to go…..

Here’s how it all came about:

Our New Zealand Van

On our trip to New Zealand in February, we rented a camper van from Escape Camper Rentals. When we got there, the German girl who checked us in said “wow, if I knew YOU were coming, I’d have had a white van for you to paint!”

Andrew & Rob, the owners of Escape, just opened a location in Los Angeles and asked if I could paint a few vans here – about 10-15. I said “let’s do it.” So, yesterday we experimented with the first one at their lot in Lawndale. Here’s how it went:

Sketching it on with Pencil

First: I designed it on paper with the shape of the van in mind. Then I drew the on the van roughly with a pencil, to give me a map to follow.

Taping off first color combo

My first color combination was yellow, orange and red.

After it dried (pretty instant), I taped that off and sprayed my second color combination of dark blue to light blue to white.

Applying Detail while Brian Ill Films

I added some detail with Uni Posca Pens and an airbrush, then pulled the tape!

Gotta have Poscas!

For spray paint, I use Montana Spray paints because the colors are bright and bold and it sprays on real smooth and easy. (They are great for surfboards, too.)

I didn’t have any problems with this whole project – much to my surprise – the only real problem was painting out in the hot sun for 10 hours.

Thanks to my good friends Perk (John Perkinson) and producer Brian ILL, we were able to document the painting in stills and video.

Yesterday was a long, hot day of painting a camper van in the sun.
