This painting is #29 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  LIVE FOR THE BIG DAYS

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Canvas Board.

Today I was dreaming of big waves, praying that they come this winter with El Nino.

It is a strange relationship with the ocean waiting for the biggest days. You try to prepare the best you can, but it comes down to the moment of paddling out, your mind says one of two thoughts;

“Yes I have been waiting for this my whole life” or

“There is no way in hell I am going out in that.”

Lets hope this year and many years to come I will meet these big days ready to paddle out. Live for the big days.

28 of 50 Paintings in 50 days by Drew Brophy SHARK SIGHTING Nov 22 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This painting is #28 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SHARK SIGHTING

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Canvas Board.

This morning I had time for a quick surf before my studio open house.  I got to the beach and was surprised to see that no one was out surfing.  It was hot and sunny and I was stoked!

There was a shark sighting sign posted, but I didn’t think it was big deal, they’ve been posted all summer.  I had a great time surfing, all by myself, for awhile. Then one of the lifeguards, a friend of mine, hollered from the pier to get out of the water.

They’ve been kicking people out of the water.  He said the shark’s been swimming from T-street to the pier all morning.

I thought it was ridiculous that they clear the beach for a shark sighting; they live in the ocean, and I see them all the time.  It’s no big deal.

That’s where today’s inspiration came from!

This painting is #26 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  BELOVED

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

I had no idea what I was going to paint this morning.  With this series, I’m not obsessing over what to paint.  When an idea strikes, I go with it.

So I sat on the back patio, thinking about it.   Maria peered through the door, asking me what I’m going to paint.  Her hair was wet and the sun shone on her face.

Then I thought of the Blue Lagoon, being stranded on an island, and who and what I would want to have there with me.  Someone I love, the ocean, my family.  These are the things that inspire me the most.

23 of 50 by Drew Brophy SYMBOLS OF GOD 9x12 50 Paintings Series Nov 17 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #23 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SYMBOLS OF GOD

SIZE:  9″x 12″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Every morning, after dropping the kids off to school, I drive past this church. Today, the sun was rising behind it, illuminating it in the most beautiful way. This painting is what I saw.

I have always been fascinated by the structure of churches and the symbols which they use. The cross, bell tower or steeple, the alter. Churches have amazing acoustics, the organs sound other-worldly in them and 100 or more people singing is a powerful experience.

I believe this is the true meaning to the idea of a church; it is used to raise your vibration.

I am not religious, but I am fascinated with practices of all religions, where the ancient symbols came from and the original ideas which may have been lost or intentionally hidden through time.

22 of 50 Paintings by Drew Brophy LOST IN THE UNIVERSE Nov 16 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #22 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  LOST IN THE UNIVERSE

SIZE:  9″x 12″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

When I was young I felt that I was bright light in a dark world, I could see that out in this world not every glow of light was the same, some were bright, some dim. I could see some lights sucking the energy from the weaker lights. Some extinguishing lights all together as their own goes out in gasp of pain.

I have always tried to share and give my light, often leaving me drained. Most of this time through out my life I have felt lost at sea or confused in this Universe of lights.

In this time I have always felt like I was ready for anything, yet the universe seems indifferent to your triumphs, hardships, and pain, it just stares ominously.

I feel that I see an even brighter light, like a ship in a storm at sea, getting closer. In my heart I feel it does not see me, or it does not realize who we are. It just stares at me as it pulls away. Why did it leave me here? As I look out in the darkness, I search for light, I want to nurture it, help it grow. I want a world full light, so next the ship comes it will see us all.

*I’m making 20 signed, limited  and numbered edition prints of most of the paintings in this series – if interested in getting one, email info@drewbrophy.com or call 949-678-8133.
