FEELING FREE TRIPTYCH Drew Brophy Sept 2013 8 x 18

FOR THE NEXT 20 DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

I’m painting from the heart, just having fun with it.  You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

(If you share my posts, please tag  #20×20 #drewbrophy #SurfArt)

Today’s Painting is the 4th of 20, titled FEELING FREE Triptych Three pieces each 8″ x 6″ (total size 8″ x 18″) on Canvas board, medium Uni Posca Paint Pens.

I think this painting would make a great t-shirt design!

On the #20×20 Commitment:  I’m not trying to create masterpieces, I’m just trying to execute a cool painting every day, using different techniques and ideas, or both.

It’s been fun trying new things, for example, with this painting.  I’m playing with color and not adding so much detail.  I’m letting the color create cool effects.  Some of these effects are inspired by artist Bill Ogden, who has a fantastic style.

Yesterdays painting TUNING INTO THE UNIVERSE was my experiment with stretching a strange concept, and executing the idea.  The first two paintings were a direct inspiration from being at the Hurley Pro surfing contest.

Painting in the studio

Today, I wanted to do a small painting, but only one 8″ x 6″ canvas board seemed too small, so I decided to grab three of them.  I’ve painted triptychs on surfboards before, but never on small canvas boards.  It’s a challenge for me to paint this small.

At the end of my #20×20, I plan to post all the paintings and ask people to choose their favorites and what they want to see more of.

This is a good experiment for me.  Thanks for being a part of it.

Please, leave me a comment and let me know what you think I should paint next!

Life is good,

Drew

Today’s Painting is the Second of 20, titled DREAMING OF WINNING AT TRESTLES 11 x 14 on Canvas Board, Uni Posca Paint Pens.

This is pro surfer Patrick Gudauskas, dreaming of winning at Trestles as a grom!

This painting was inspired by Patrick’s surfing in the Hurley Pro yesterday, where he beat Kelly Slater.   Spectators on the beach cheered him on.

Today Patrick competed against Taj Burrows and didn’t win but he qualified to surf in all the other WCT events.  Watch out for Patrick Gudauskas blowing up in the next three events!

Patrick is a San Clemente local and one of the three frothing, eternal grommets, the Gudauskas brothers.  I’m stoked to have such a great ambassador representing San Clemente on the World Tour.

GONE SURFING Limited Run Tee

GONE SURFING Limited Run BIG WAVE COLLECTION

Over the years, we have gotten many, many requests for Drew’s art on t-shirts.  And quite honestly, I had been putting it off for a long time, even though Drew wanted to do it.

I held back because it used to be that you had to print large quantities, which was a big investment, for a top quality tee.

But now, the printing processes are so advanced!  We now are able to print on QUALITY t-shirt blanks, in smaller quantities, so we can offer many designs.

WHY COLLECTIBLE?  A lot of Drew’s fans want collectible items, where they are one of a few people who own it.  So, we decided to create designs that are only available for 8 weeks at a time; this way, the tees would be collectible.

The t-shirt blanks we use are super-soft, made of 100% cotton and fitted so they look really good on you.   Everyone loves them!

Dreamland Drew Brophy T Shirt

Dreamland T shirt available in 4-pack

Our first collection, THE SURFING COLLECTION, was available ONLY UNTIL SEPT.13th, but don’t despair – you can still get them in a 4-pack.  http://store.drewbrophy.com/t-shirts/.

In our first 3 days of getting the word out about these collectible tees, we sold over 30 t-shirts!  (That’s a lot for a small company like ours.)

The newest, BIG WAVE COLLECTION, will be available through November 15.

You can order your collectible t-shirts now at http://store.drewbrophy.com/t-shirts/.   (And thank you if you do – we appreciate your support of our business!)

What’s your opinion of us limiting the print runs and time available?  Do you think it will make Drew’s collectors happy to know that only a small number of people will have these t-shirts?

Let us know what you think in the comments, please!  We would love to hear your feedback.

Thanks,

Maria

Maiden of Lake Jocassee

Maiden of Lake Jocassee

During the 1700’s, there was a thriving Cherokee nation that lived in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains which is located in the upstate of South Carolina.  Little did a Cherokee maiden in that time era, named Jocassee, know that her name would become a legend.

Last year Maria and I gave an Experiential Workshop at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.

It was warm and sunny in the Appalachian Mountains outside of Greenville, so we took a day to drive out to Lake Jocassee, a must-see if you are near the area!

Lake Jocassee is situated in the foothills of the Appalachians, surrounded by forests.

The water was crystal clear with miles of nooks and crannies to explore.

Maria at Lake Jocassee with Riviera Standup Paddleboard

Maria at Lake Jocassee with Riviera Standup Paddleboard

The lake was perfect for standup paddleboards, and the water was still warm the second week of October.

It was peaceful and picturesque.  There are many mountain trails around the lake and waterfalls around the area.

After a great day of paddling and exploring the lake, we met Debbie, owner of Eclectic Sun Paddlesports.  She loved our painted van and seven months later, Debbie commissioned me to create artwork for her company logo.

It’s funny how taking a vacation always gets me new business!

The Design:

When I create a new piece of art, it’s important to me to capture something that’s real about the subject.

When I researched the history of the Lake, I found hand-drawn pictures of Native Americans standup-paddling their canoes.  Maybe they were the first standup paddlers!  I imagine this place was very special to them.

The lake is named after a maiden Cherokee named Jocassee.  Legend has it that a broken-hearted Jocassee walked on the water to greet the ghost of her beloved, who had been murdered.  Her name has come to be known as “The Place of the Lost one.”

So it seemed fitting to paint my version of the beautiful maiden Jocassee “walking on water” using a standup paddleboard, across the lake.

The painting was created with paint pens on canvas board, sized 12″ x 18″.  Eclectic Sun bought the original painting.

Below you can see pictures of the different uses of the artwork for Eclectic Sun.  If you ever find yourself at Lake Jocassee, stop in and see Debbie and tell her hello for me!

Drew, signing posters at 2012 event

Drew will be signing posters (free) at PANHE Event in San Clemente from 1:00 – 2:30 on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

PANHE is a sacred Native American land in San Clemente.  Every year during Earth Day, there is a Panhe Earth Day Celebration held at the San Mateo Campground in San Clemente.

Panhe, which translates to “place by the water,” is an ancient Acjachemen village whose site is estimated to be about 9,500 years old. PANHE continues to be used as both a spiritual and ceremonial site.

Each year during Panhe Celebration, the natives from this land come together to share their ancient stories with the public, with the goal to inspire a love of the land and the desire to protect it, in everyone.

In 2011, Drew painted his rendition of Panhe after attending the awesome event.  Once again this year, the San Onofre Foundation, who puts on the Panhe Celebration, is using the artwork for their posters and advertisements.

3 Dot Magazine Dec 21, 2012 Issue

“Welcome to the beginning to the end….

We begin this issue with an interview with Surf Artist Drew Brophy, the Twilight Saga’s Sexy New Vampire: Judi Shekoni, Q&A with Artist Ian Ward, Q&A with Actor Mem Ferda, Review of the film Musical Chairs, Interview with artist Bill Strydesky, Review of Cursive’s I Am Gemini…”

Drew Brophy was interviewed by Don Perry and photographed by Scott Smallin of 3 Dot Magazine, when visiting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in fall of 2012.

We first heard of the famed photographer Scott Smallin in the year 2000, when Drew and I got married at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach.  Scott was one of the team of photographers that we hired for our wedding!

Now, over twelve years later, we find ourselves back in Myrtle Beach, this time to paint a large mural.

And, once again we are being shot by Scott Smallin, this time for 3 Dot Magazine!

Funny how life brings you ’round in circles.

Here’s how the 3 Dot Magazine Drew Brophy story begins:

DREW BROPHY IS THE SURF LIFESTYLE:

Drew Brophy, the surfer, the artist, the husband, the father, the teacher, and the list goes on…

Drew talks about how he created a life of art, surf and travel and what it takes to be a professional artist.

He explains how he beat all odds, and proved his high school guidance counselor wrong when she told him that “you can’t just surf and paint your whole life!”

To view the magazine online, visit:  www.donaldeperry.com/dotdotdotmag/3dotmag_dec2012.  To print, visit: www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/487431

Here is a video interview from 3 Dot Magazine, with Drew Brophy on location in Myrtle Beach, SC, at the Lulu’s Cafe Mural.
