Sometimes the sunset is so bright that everything turns gold and the greens get super green.

This is the view from my house of the sun setting over Catalina Island through the palm trees.   It never gets old.

I’ve always wanted to paint this.  I’d like to paint this scene in oils one day.

San Clemente SUNRISE 19 of 50 Paintings Nov 13 2015 by Drew BrophyFOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #19 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SAN CLEMENTE SUNRISE

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

This morning I went to the San Clemente pier to begin today’s paint study.  The sunrise was so inspiring, I had to paint it.

Every day I check the waves at the pier, and this is my view.  Off in the distance is Cotton’s Point, where President Nixon used to live in the Western Whitehouse.

Midway is the famed T-Street surf break.  There are lots of nooks and crannies in between.  I’m standing on the pier, looking at the silhouettes of palm trees.

I feel so fortunate to live here.  Life is Good.

*I’m making 20 signed, limited  and numbered edition prints of this one – if interested in getting one, email info@drewbrophy.com or call 949-678-8133.

This painting is #18 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SUP SURFING TIKI

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

A friend asked me about backside tube-riding on a sup.

I described how I put the paddle across my body and drag it in the face of the wave, slowing down to shoot the tube.

That’s what this tiki’s doing.

Tube riding on a standup paddleboard is awesome.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to a guy named Mike from NY.   Take good care of my Tiki, Mike.

POCHE FLAG 17 of 50 Paintings in 50 Days by Drew Brophy Nov 11 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #17 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  POCHE FLAG

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

In Capo Beach, right outside of San Clemente, CA, there’s an area called Poche Beach.

One day, many years ago, a big storm washed the remnant of a giant tree up on the shore at Poche.  Someone saw that big piece of driftwood and placed a flagpole in it, and then erected an American flag.

The Poche Flag has been through many storms and winds.  It still stands there today, as a tribute to our country and our veterans.  You could say it’s become a local icon.

With this winter’s El Nino storms coming, the Poche flag is going to be in for it’s biggest fight yet.

I decided to paint this iconic flag in celebration of Veterans Day today.

What I like the best about the Poche flag is that it happened organically. It wasn’t sanctioned by any government or organization; it was a combination of nature and man, coming together to display a love for our country and our community, on a beautiful beach.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to San Clemente local Steve Kuhn. He’s a huge fan of the Poche beach flag.  Glad he got it.

One of my goals with this series is to make original art affordable for those who want it.   If interested in adding tomorrow’s to your collection, please email info@drewbrophy.com or text or call 949-678-8133 asap!

I hope you enjoy this series.  Thanks for reading!

ICBM painting 14 of 50 by Drew Brophy Nov 8 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #14 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  ICBM – INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Last night we saw the craziest thing in the night sky.  It was a huge area lit up bright white and blue with a green tail – at first we thought it was a comet, but it was moving too slow.  Then I found out it was an ICBM, aka an INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE.  It was launched from a submarine right off shore in Southern California.  (Here’s a video a local took of it at the beach here in town)

An ICBM is a missile that can be sent to other continents, across the world.  Last night was a test.  The military even diverted commercial air flights to run these tests.  Gotta wonder, WHY? It’s kinda scary, seeing this from my front yard.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Eric Hildwein, another artist from Florida, who I’ve known for a long time.  He bought this as his son Dylan’s first ever original painting – which is cool, because his son isn’t born yet.  He’ll be here in April 2016!

8 of 50 Paintings in 50 days by Drew Brophy STORMS COMING Nov 2 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #8 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  STORMS COMING

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Yesterday in San Clemente, CA, it was 80 degrees and beautiful.  The ocean was a warm 70 degrees and the waves were glassy.

Overnight, that changed.  Today was chilly, the wind was swirling and dark clouds have crept in.  Amazing how the weather changes, it has always fascinated me to see mother nature come to life. A storm is coming.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Robin A of Eugene, OR.  It’s her first ever original painting.  I’m glad to have been the start of her art collection!

Collage of Drew Brophy SC Art Fredrix Canvas Event Photos by Jonie PhotoI’m always traveling and doing art projects in other parts of the world.  I wanted to do something cool with my local community in San Clemente, with the idea of inspiring kids (young and old) to get creative, paint, and have fun with it.

I teamed up with Fredrix Canvas, SC Art Supply and Uni Posca for a “Paint with Drew” day, last Friday.

Fredrix Canvas makes the best quality and variety of canvas out there. They have all types for artists to be creative.  Their large canvas panels are perfect for my move-able mural paintings.   I paint on them with paint pens and spray paint; they always come out great.

Last September I painted 20 paintings in 20 days; they were all painted on Fredrix Canvas.

This year, I wanted to see what people can do with Fredrix’s new, awesome “black canvas”.  The black canvas works great with the bright colors I like to paint with.

Fredrix donated a generous supply of black canvas for the event, SC Art Supply hosted the event, and Uni Posca donated paint pens.

We invited the public to come out and paint, and they showed up in droves.

Some kids came and wouldn’t leave; they were having too much fun painting.  It was so cool for me to see their enthusiasm for art.

One teenager showed up with a painting he did on canvas, inspired by my style.

Local professional artist Lauren Tannehill showed up with her family, we saw San Clemente business owners and surfers and skaters and everything in between.

It was an awesome day!

Here’s a short photo slide show from the event (All photos shot by Jonie Photo):

A CELEBRATION OF SURF AND ART; WHAT DOES SURFING MEAN TO YOU!

Drew’s work as an artist takes him all over the world, partnering with communities to paint murals and create art inspired projects.

Now, Drew wants to combine the love for art, and San Clemente’s love of surfing, right here in his home town, during the Hurley Pro contest (the biggest, authentic surf event of the WCT)

Drew has put together a week-long celebration of Art & Surf for our community right here in San Clemente!

For 6 days, Drew will be painting a “movable mural”, 18 feet long, at different locations in town.  (2 of the locations have Brophy Poster Give-aways – See locations at bottom of this post)

MAKE AND TAKE:  The week will finish with an afternoon of “Painting with Drew” at San Clemente Art Supply Store.

It’s open to the public, and it’s free, thanks to the the generosity of Fredrix Canvas and SC Art Supply.  Bring your family and expose them to an afternoon of painting and creativity, for free!

This event coincides with the Hurley Pro surfing event, and the North Beach Art Walk.   On Friday, after you enjoy creating your own art, you can stroll the art walk.

During the week, Drew will be painting live and asking you to share “what is surfing” to you!  Your answer to that question is an entry into a drawing to win one of the Drew Brophy canvas art prints that will be given away on Friday, Sept 12, at SC Art Supply.

We hope you’ll join us, talk story, and tell us what surfing means to you!
