Solar Flare Painting by Drew Brophy 18 x 24 Mixed Media on Canvas

SOLAR FLARE 18″ x 24″ on Canvas

This SOLAR FLARE painting was inspired by my love of the sun.  It’s mixed media on canvas, sized 18″ x 24″ using a combination of Createx paint and Uni Poscas.

I’ve had a life-long fascination with waves and the sun.

Many people don’t realize the power of the sun; that it is everything;  it gives us light, warmth and life.

I often wonder how solar wind affects our weather on a daily basis.   Sunspots can produce solar flares, directed at the earth, and have a huge impact on us.

Scientists even attribute solar flares to earthquakes, due to the fluctuation to the magnetic field.

I contemplate what kind of effects solar activity has on the waves we ride, and the intensity of the sunburn we get when surfing.

I have noticed more intensity in the sun, and I wonder if solar flares have something to do with it.  It seems as if the sun is releasing more energy; but it’s probably due to the fact that earth’s magnetic field is weakening, providing less protection.  The solar radiation is able to penetrate deeper to the surface of earth.

This change obviously affects our weather and our waves and how much sunburn our bodies get.  I wonder what other impact this solar wind has on us?

Almost all religions can be traced back to sun worship.  Why do you think that is?

If we call the Earth our Mother, then for sure the Sun is our Father.

The sun is our source of heat and light.  It is energy.  It is everything.

My sister Andrea and her husband Jackie invited us to a Dunes Club Halloween Party when we were in Myrtle Beach, S.C. for Halloween one year.

I had less than an hour to come up with a costume.

Thanks to the wonders of duct-tape, palm frauns and cardboard, I was able to throw this medicine man Halloween costume together fast, in less than 30 minutes.

(The only thing I bought for this was the skull head.)

Here’s how you can make your own Medicine Man Halloween Costume, using everyday household items:

COMPONENTS:

FACE MASK – Cardboard, Uni Posca Paint Pens, wire, palm fronds, duct tape

Draw a creepy mask on cardboard, then cut it out with scissors.  Put a piece of wire inside the  mask so it keeps it’s curve.  Secure it with duct tape on the inside.  A strap to hold it on was made with duct tape.  The palm fronds were cut and laid into a fan on the top, and around the back of the strap, and secured with duct tape.  (If you don’t have palm fronds, try any other green, sturdy leaves.)  For paint pens, any will do.  I prefer Posca.

TOP – Found an old furry ski vest my dad used to wear decades ago.

GRASS SKIRT- A pair of board shorts with a grass-green colors, palm fronds, duct tape:  LAY out long pieces of duct tape and cut palm fronds to lay the ends on the duct tape, until it looks cool.  Lay duct tape on top, size it to your waist, and put it on over your shorts.

Taping on the palm fronds

SKULL HEAD PROP – I bought the skull at Michael’s Arts & Crafts store.  I duct taped it to a broom stick and taped palm fronds beneath it.

ACCESSORIES – I found some shell necklaces and bracelets around the house.

LAST MINUTE IDEA – For authenticity, I drew arm-band tattoos around my arms with sharpie markers.

I love making my own costumes  – they always look so much better than one you can buy.  Part of the fun of Halloween is making your own.

This costume was a big hit – everyone loved it!

RIDING THE WAVE OF LIFE by Drew Brophy 16 x 20 Canvas Board 20x20 Series Oct 2013FOR the past 20 DAYS, I CREATED 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

I painted from the heart, just having fun with it.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This Painting is THE LAST of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled RIDING THE WAVE OF LIFE, 16″ x 20″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

This is the final painting of my series and I wanted it to be the best one yet.

When I look at this process from the last 20 days, I see it as an exercise in loosening up, and learning how to better execute different techniques.

This painting is a reflection of all that.  And, in the end, I realize that I just love to paint surf images…

I hope you like it, Life is Good,

Drew

This painting is SOLD to Bill P. from New Jersey.  Thanks Bill!

Salt Creek by Drew Brophy 16 x 20 Painting Canvas Board Oct 2013 sFOR 20 DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

I’m painting from the heart, just having fun with it.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This Painting is #19 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled SALT CREEK , 16″ x 20″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

The inspiration for this painting came from a great surf session on Saturday.

I love the Fall season in California, because on some days we still get South swells and Santa Ana off-shore winds; the perfect combination for surfing.

This is precisely what happened this past weekend.  There was a beautiful, long period South swell.  The water was 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.

I imagined what it would be like to be at Salt Creek with just a few friends.  I surfed with my friend Justin and about 200 other people that I left out of the painting!

It was a great day.  Hope you like the painting.

LOVE SHACK by Drew Brophy 8x10 Canvas Board 20x20 Series Oct 2013 sFOR 20 CONSECUTIVE DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

I’m painting from the heart, just having fun with it.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This Painting is #18 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled LOVE SHACK , 8″ x 10″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

My 20 Paintings in 20 Days had a hiccup on Friday, when we left town to go camping and paddleboarding for 3 days.

There wasn’t a working wifi connection where we were (there was supposed to be, but it didn’t work.)

Before getting on the road, I was running around like crazy tying up loose ends and getting obligations taken care of.

This painting, LOVE SHACK, was the vision of what I was wishing I was doing instead of the last minute hustle before leaving.

Do you like LOVE SHACK?  Leave me some feedback in the comments, please.  Your feedback is very important to me.

MELTING POT Painting by Drew Brophy 9 x 12 Gesso Board Oct 2013 20x20 Series Uni PoscaFOR 20 CONSECUTIVE DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.    TODAY IS DAY 17!

I’m painting from the heart, just having fun with it.  You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

Today’s Painting is #17 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled MELTING POT, 9″ x 12″ on Gesso Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

.

Today’s painting inspiration was sparked by an unexpected visit from the State Board of Equalization.
.
They sent their tax auditors into the various businesses along the “surf Ghetto” of San Clemente this morning.
.
One of the auditors walked in my studio and demanded to see our papers! (resale tax documents…)
.
After asking me a line of official questions, he said “I had a painted surfboard of yours as a kid.  It was my favorite; you painted a melting sun and wave on it.”
.
Back in my old painting surfboards for  …Lost days, I used to paint a lot of melting waves and suns.  So, I decided to paint one today.
.
I hope you like it!

Today’s Painting is #16 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled STORMY SKY, 9″ x 12″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

Today’s painting was inspired when Maria and I drove along Pacific Coast Highway this morning, and looked out at the horizon as we passed POCHE Beach.
.
The sunrise from the east was illuminating the ocean, with dark, brooding skies contrasting over the water.
.
The ocean was emerald green, and milky from the southern winds stirring up the sediment, causing it to glow against the stormy skies.
.
It made for beautiful, yet slightly ominous, lighting on the water.  Hope you like it.

FURLOUGH DAY by Drew Brophy 16 x 20 Canvas Board 20x20 Series Painting Oct 1 2013 sFOR 20 CONSECUTIVE DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.    TODAY IS DAY 15!

Today’s Painting is #15 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled WHAT TO DO ON FURLOUGH DAY, 16″ x 20″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

I was so stoked about this weekend because we had made plans to camp at Joshua Tree National Park.  We’ve been planning this trip for months with friends Kat and Justin.

It never occurred to me that a government shutdown would affect me.  Until today, when I found out that all National Parks are CLOSED due to the shutdown!  This is trivial compared to some of the real problems that other people are dealing with in light of this shutdown.

But, I’ve come to realize that we are like two different societies; us and them.  The politicians are so disconnected from the public that they only argue for their own agendas and have no idea what this nation needs.  I vote that we get rid of all of them and start with real leaders!

Over the next few days (or weeks), I suspect that the beach will be more crowded now that government workers are furloughed!

Life is Good, Drew

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH aka Super Fit Woman Standup Paddleing Painting by Drew Brophy 20x20 Series Collection Sept 2013 sFOR 20 CONSECUTIVE DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.    TODAY IS DAY 14!

Today’s Painting is #14 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH,  (aka SUPER FIT WOMAN) 16″ x 20″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

This painting was inspired by seeing all the super fit women at the Battle of the Paddle this past weekend.

Paddleboarding just does something to a woman’s physique, toning all of her muscles and making her strong.

It’s great to see more women out on the water enjoying nature and living an active, healthy lifestyle.  The women who are into paddleboarding seem to be strong, confident and adventurous.  It’s very attractive.

This painting is dedicated to all those women who refuse to give up their youth and choose to enjoy life to the fullest.  I think that’s why we are all here.

Life is Good,

Drew

TINY TUBE Painting by Drew Brophy 6 x 9 Canvas Board 20x20 Collection Sept 29 2013FOR THE NEXT 20 DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.    TODAY IS DAY 13!

Today’s Painting is #13 of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled TINY TUBE,  6″ x 9″ on Canvas Board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

I started this painting late in the day today, just after painting two Riviera Paddle Surf Paddles and then delivering them to Riviera at the Battle of the Paddle event.  After that, I managed to sneak in a surf, then had to start this painting before heading out for my friend Heather and Josh’s wedding.

Besides the challenge to paint 20 pieces in 20 days, my other goal is to surf every single day.  It’s amazing how much better my life is when I make the time to go surf every day.

Everyone needs a ‘tiny tube’!

Life is Good,

Drew
