50 Fascinations

21 of 50 RETURN OF THE BLUE KACHINA A by Drew Brophy Nov 15 2015 21 of 50 RETURN OF THE BLUE KACHINA B by Drew Brophy Nov 15 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

“When the Blue Star Kachina makes its appearance in the heavens, the Fifth World will emerge.”  Hopi Prophecy

These paintings are #21a and #21B of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

There were two people who tried to buy this painting at the same time.  The way this series works is this:  I sell the painting to the first who asks.  Often there are many who want the painting of the day.  But today, the 2nd person tried to buy it only 2 seconds after the first, and she had attempted to buy the last three paintings.  I couldn’t say no again.

So I decided to paint a 2nd painting today, just for her. It’s a mirror image of the first.  There’s no waves today so I have the time. And it turned out to be really cool.

TITLE:  RETURN OF THE BLUE STAR KACHINA

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

This painting was inspired by the Hopi legend of the return of the blue star kachina.

Last summer we took a road trip through the Four Corners Region (Lake Powell, Mesa Verde, Valley of the God, etc.)  A few years ago I standup paddled the entire length of 225 miles through the Grand Canyon.  I  fell in love with the history and landscape of this area.

This region is home to the Hopi and Navajo Nations.  I saw many of their petroglyphs and ruins and I’m  fascinated with their ancient art and legends.  Do a search of “Return of the Blue Star Kachina” and read about the prophesy.

This painting is #19 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SAN CLEMENTE SUNRISE

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

This morning I went to the San Clemente pier to begin today’s paint study.  The sunrise was so inspiring, I had to paint it.

Every day I check the waves at the pier, and this is my view.  Off in the distance is Cotton’s Point, where President Nixon used to live in the Western Whitehouse.

Midway is the famed T-Street surf break.  There are lots of nooks and crannies in between.  I’m standing on the pier, looking at the silhouettes of palm trees.

I feel so fortunate to live here.  Life is Good.

TITLE:  SUP SURFING TIKI

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

A friend asked me about backside tube-riding on a sup.

I described how I put the paddle across my body and drag it in the face of the wave, slowing down to shoot the tube.

That’s what this tiki’s doing.

Tube riding on a standup paddleboard is awesome.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to a guy named Mike from NY.   Take good care of my Tiki, Mike.

OUROBOROS day 16 of 50 Paintings Drew Brophy Nov 10 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #16 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  OUROBOROS

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail.

The Ouroboros often symbolizes self-reflectivity or a cycle, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself.

It’s the same thing as yin and yang.  At it’s essence, it’s positive and negative ions, which is operating the entire universe.  It’s good and bad, light and dark, it’s everything.

I was inspired to paint this symbol after watching the documentary THUNDERBOLTS OF THE GODS last night.  It ties into my studies of the Theory of the Electric Universe.  To understand more about this, watch the documentary.  It’ll melt your mind and maybe create a little enlightenment, too.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Kyle Kniffin, a longtime collector of mine who lives in Sedona, Arizona.  Thanks, Kyle, stoked to send this one to you!

15 of 50 Paintings NAZARE by Drew Brophy Nov 9 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #15 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  NAZARE

SIZE:  9″x 12″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Rarely do I ever paint from a photo, but today’s painting was inspired by a shot of Garrett McNamara surfing a huge wave at Nazare.  I’m fascinated by the immensity of this wave.

In my painting, it looks like I exaggerated the size of the wave, but I didn’t.

Nazare is a big wave surf spot in Portugal.  Last week Garrett slayed that wave; it may well be one of the biggest waves ever ridden.

I’ve surfed with Garrett over the years.  We are about the same age, and he inspires me to know that like him, I can still push the limits of riding big waves, too.

ICBM painting 14 of 50 by Drew Brophy Nov 8 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #14 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  ICBM – INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Last night we saw the craziest thing in the night sky.  It was a huge area lit up bright white and blue with a green tail – at first we thought it was a comet, but it was moving too slow.  Then I found out it was an ICBM, aka an INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE.  It was launched from a submarine right off shore in Southern California.  (Here’s a video a local took of it at the beach here in town)

An ICBM is a missile that can be sent to other continents, across the world.  Last night was a test.  The military even diverted commercial air flights to run these tests.  Gotta wonder, WHY? It’s kinda scary, seeing this from my front yard.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Eric Hildwein, another artist from Florida, who I’ve known for a long time.  He bought this as his son Dylan’s first ever original painting – which is cool, because his son isn’t born yet.  He’ll be here in April 2016!

TITLE:  MAROONED

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

I am fascinated with idea of being marooned on an island.

I would get busy building, fishing and surviving.

I would shape a surfboard or paddle board for sure.

The only question would be whether or not I would want to be saved.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Jonny Moore, a San Clemente local.  Glad I’ll get to meet him in person when he comes to pick it up at my studio.  This one was meaningful for Jonny, as the lucky number #13 is reminiscent of his late, great beloved brother.

TITLE:  STORMS COMING

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Yesterday in San Clemente, CA, it was 80 degrees and beautiful.  The ocean was a warm 70 degrees and the waves were glassy.

Overnight, that changed.  Today was chilly, the wind was swirling and dark clouds have crept in.  Amazing how the weather changes, it has always fascinated me to see mother nature come to life. A storm is coming.
