We are very happy to announce that the Franklin G. Burroughs • Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, S.C. is curating a Drew Brophy Retrospective Exhibition the summer of 2018.

Many of Drew’s collectors are graciously loaning their Brophy paintings for the exhibition, and for that, we are very grateful.

MAKING WAVES – A Drew Brophy Retrospective

Franklin G. Burroughs Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – June 23rd through September 16 2018.

This is the first museum exhibition devoted to the full scope of the career of Drew Brophy, considered to be one of the most prolific surf inspired artists in history.    Brophy began his art career in his hometown of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The exhibition presents an opportunity to study the artist’s development over three decades, beginning with his early illustration works as a teenager, to his surfboard painting explosion in the 1990’s, and onto his illustrated career designing everything under the sun in action sports.  There will also be an introduction into the current fine art paintings inspired by Drew’s love for nature and physics.

The exhibition includes over fifty original art pieces and will occupy Myrtle Beach Art Museum’s entire first floor gallery space, totaling approximately 1,700 square feet.

Brophy’s retrospective includes paintings, drawings, sketches and surfboards.  Included in the exhibition are the artist’s most iconic paintings—among them Pure Joy (2001), Sunrise (2006), and celebrated surfboard triptychs from the 1990’s.  Also exhibited will be Brophy’s art on skateboards, wakeboards and apparel, and the accompanying paintings that were used to design them.

Brophy’s career as an illustrator and painter comes full circle in this upcoming exhibition, as he is bringing his art that he created around the world, back home again.

Brophy’s unique style of artwork has inspired thousands of artists to take up painting, using his favorite mediums and emulating his distinct painting style.  (Some of the pieces on exhibit are available and can be acquired here.)

Drew Brophy and his wife Maria will be available at the exhibition for the first two weeks, leading several scheduled, guided tours.

Locals-PaintingSometimes just a simple painting on an old surfboard can brighten someone’s outlook on life.   Art can change lives and broaden perspectives.  And sometimes a kid will paint for the first time, and realize that they love it.  It can be a life-changing event.

That’s why when I travel I like to spend a few days with the local groms, showing them how to paint their own surfboards and skateboards.  (The last time was in Puerto Escondido).  This year, I’m going to Sayulita, Mexico, a little surfing town.  Maria and I will give a free painting workshop for kids (and adults).  All supplies are being donated by some of the great companies we work with (named below).

WHEN:  Friday, June 17, 2016  1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

WHERE:  ULA, Marlin 8, Sayulita, Mexico

WHAT:  Posca Paint Pen workshop – learn how to paint your stuff with paint pens.  I’ll also have plenty of Fredrix Canvas boards to paint on.

THANKS TO:   My friends at Posca for giving us all the paint pens we will need for this event.  Also, Fredrix Canvas generously donated a large supply of canvas boards.  And, my favorite shoe company, KEEN, donated plenty of goodies to give out as well.

Blog post and pictures will follow when we return.  It will be fun.

A LIFE WELL LIVED - Drew Brophy Sacred Geometry Mural Painting for Keen

Click on the photo to blow it up!

Every painting tells a story.  Often my art reflects the current events in my life and my interpretation of the way I see the world.

This painting began as mural project for Keen.  It is painted on 9 Fredrix Canvas gallery-wrap panels, six feet tall and 18 feet long.  I painted it live during Keenfest in Salt Lake City Utah summer of 2014.

I have worked with Keen for many years. They are so much more than a shoe company, they are people striving to do everything better.  Their enthusiasm is infectious, they truly inspire me to be more adventurous and their ideals push me to be better at everything I do.

When designing the painting, I began thinking of all the places that Keen shoes take people.  I also thought about how these forward thinking people affected others and the world around them.

I quickly realized that this was not about shoes but was about getting out into nature, doing things to the best of your ability for the benefit of everyone, and the connection to each other and the environment.

This was a tall order so I started drawing circles.Mural-sketch-drew-brophy-art-keen painting circles flower of life vesica pisces

The circles slowly began to take shape into a Flower of Life Pattern, this process was hypnotic, and I began to think of what a gift it is to be born into this beautiful world full of possibilities.

I love the water and I love surfing, all life contains water.  We are 90% water, we are the clouds, seeds of information coded for life, from the joining of two circles, creates space for a third within the vesica piscis, love is transformed into a new child of the earth.  Like butterflies emerging from cocoons.

We are all Miracles searching for new experiences, we are the rain that nourishes all life.

BOY on the Beach _ALifeWellLived_-drew-brophy-mural art-painting-keenfest-sacred-geometryThe boy on the beach represents the time when we are young, everything is amazing and new, we are constantly curious, and fearless. This is one the most amazing periods of life, I tell my kids not to be in hurry to grow up, just enjoy each age to the fullest. Enjoy all of your firsts.

When we begin our path in life we play, we grow, and we begin to realize that experiences and interaction with others are everything.

Knowledge comes from constantly pushing into the unknown and understanding that there is always something new and more to learn.  The trick is to know what you really want, where do you want to go, what makes you feel good?

We are the streams and rivers flowing across the earth, we are meant to be free. We want to flow towards the things that feel good and avoid the things that feel bad.  It is a constant flow, like time, always moving towards the ocean where we all began.

Hopefully with enough experiences and time you will arrive at place of interconnected reality, you realize we are only here to enjoy the ride.

Reality is being fully present and it lies in the expansion of our experiences and thoughts with others.  It is the discovery that there is no separation, everything is connected, and we are all deeply rooted in the fabric of everything.

This is represented by the man in the center doing a yoga tree pose. This is also the understanding of who we really are.

A Life Well Lived Drew Brophy painting itWe are liquid light at one with nature beyond our physical body. This is represented by the Merkabah, the conduit which your life force exists in this world, this invisible energy flows  through the Flower of Life Pattern into everything it scales infinitely  larger and smaller.

In this is the understanding everything is a vibration of energy, manifesting matter in five combinations of shapes, called the platonic solids.  These shapes make up all elements of matter which consists of almost entirely empty space.

With this understanding everything becomes only thought which is manifesting everything.

What seems so complex is simple, everything is control over your thoughts and desire.  It is the power of creativity, we are all creators of our reality.  This is the knowledge to teach your children.

You are what you think, anything is possible, life is to be enjoyed, and we are all connected as one.

As time moves forward everything is in a state of renewal and transformation.

The fire and Lava represent this as the cycle of light turns to dark. The darkness and its creatures represent the path of loneliness of a lost soul who has become disconnected and alone.  If he only knew to fall back into the flow where there is nothing to fear and only love.

Salmon spend their last days swimming upstream to the place of their birth. They lay their eggs in the hopes that their offspring will live on, thus continuing the cycle.  Connected souls have no fear they will give everything to others and in so they will live on in their thoughts forever.

Saturn represents the unknown, and all that is left to be learned in an ever-expanding universe. There will always be more that you wanted to see and do.

It is the thought of what you did do throughout your life that counts.

The owl represents Wisdom; even in the darkness he sees joy and Love and he has the sense to follow it and flow with it.  This is your path and your time.

In the end, when it’s time to return to the light, have no fear, look back on a life well lived.  Smile upon the cherished memories of your experiences with all that you loved on this earth.  Take joy in all that you gave of yourself to others in kindness. Your hopes, dreams, and example live on within them.

This painting was heavily influenced by the loss of my father.  He is the one entering the light, I am in the middle seeing my childhood and my death, and my son stands on the beach, with his entire life in front of him.

When I think of my dad, I think of all that he gave me, I think of all the memories.

In the end that’s all that is left, experiences of shared time together. His life was well lived, he is loved. He lives on in me and my son. It is the cycle life.   He took his last breaths on this earth with my Mother and all of his children holding him with love, we escorted him to the other side, and he was not alone.

I hope this painting inspires people to live life to its fullest.  I hope it inspires them to be the best people they can be.

I also hope it reminds everyone just how lucky they are to be here.

Dedicated to Thomas Alphonsus Brophy, Best dad ever!

TITLE: STOKE-A-RAMA

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

Went down to check the waves this morning.  Surfers were running down the street, towards the break, with surfboards tucked under their arms.

From the littlest grom to the older guy with a longboard, they all had that same look of stoke on their faces.

The anticipation of paddling out is a stoke that’s hard to describe.  Pure joy.

This Paint Study is SOLD to Kathy L., a regular collector of my art.

TITLE: MIND’S EYE

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

What if we got it all wrong?  What if this biological organism we know as our bodies isn’t really us; what if it’s just a vessel; but our mind’s eye is like a spaceship; actually from somewhere else.

Maybe what we are seeing and creating is like a video game and our bodies are the avatar.

If you knew that this life is just an experience, how would it be different for you?

If you knew that the REAL you is at the controls somewhere, and that maybe the real you is choosing these experiences for you, how would that change the way you see things in your life?

38 of 50 Paint Studies CHASING WAVES WITH FUDO by Drew Brophy Dec 2 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This is #38 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.

TITLE:  CHASING WAVES WITH FUDO

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

Today’s painting is inspired by the idea of being on a boat, chasing waves, in far away places.

I added something different in the sky, inspired by my good friend Mark Longenecker (well known tattoo artist from Cocoa Beach, FL, and InkMasters TV Show star).

Mark was painting alongside me this morning, creating his own version of the Japanese Diety called FUDO.  So I added FUDO into my sky.

FUDO is said to convert anger into compassion and cuts the ties of negative feelings to liberate us from the suffering through self control.

This painting study is available – SOLD to Elsie in Mission Viejo, CA.

37 of 50 Paint Studies in 50 days - Electric Universe by Drew Brophy Dec 1 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

This is #37 of 50 in the #50Paintings Paint Studies series.

TITLE:  ELECTRIC UNIVERSE

SIZE:  12″x 12″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Archival Canvas Board.

One of my hobbies is studying alternate theories in physics.

One of the theories challenging the Theory of Relativity is The Electric Universe.

It says that the Universe works on electrical principles; that energy is exchanged electrically, galaxy to galaxy, from the sun to the planets.

Everything is an electrical exchange.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #19 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  SAN CLEMENTE SUNRISE

SIZE:  11″x 14″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

This morning I went to the San Clemente pier to begin today’s paint study.  The sunrise was so inspiring, I had to paint it.

Every day I check the waves at the pier, and this is my view.  Off in the distance is Cotton’s Point, where President Nixon used to live in the Western Whitehouse.

Midway is the famed T-Street surf break.  There are lots of nooks and crannies in between.  I’m standing on the pier, looking at the silhouettes of palm trees.

I feel so fortunate to live here.  Life is Good.

TITLE:  SUP SURFING TIKI

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

A friend asked me about backside tube-riding on a sup.

I described how I put the paddle across my body and drag it in the face of the wave, slowing down to shoot the tube.

That’s what this tiki’s doing.

Tube riding on a standup paddleboard is awesome.

ICBM painting 14 of 50 by Drew Brophy Nov 8 2015FOR 50 DAYS, I’M CREATING 50 PAINT STUDIES that reflect 50 things that fascinate me.

You might love ’em, you might hate ’em, but either way, I hope they invoke a feeling for you.

This painting is #14 of 50 in the #50Paintings series.

TITLE:  ICBM – INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE

SIZE:  8″x 10″ paint pen on Fredrix Pro Series Archival Canvas Board.

Last night we saw the craziest thing in the night sky.  It was a huge area lit up bright white and blue with a green tail – at first we thought it was a comet, but it was moving too slow.  Then I found out it was an ICBM, aka an INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE.  It was launched from a submarine right off shore in Southern California.  (Here’s a video a local took of it at the beach here in town)

An ICBM is a missile that can be sent to other continents, across the world.  Last night was a test.  The military even diverted commercial air flights to run these tests.  Gotta wonder, WHY? It’s kinda scary, seeing this from my front yard.

This painting study is available for purchase SOLD to Eric Hildwein, another artist from Florida, who I’ve known for a long time.  He bought this as his son Dylan’s first ever original painting – which is cool, because his son isn’t born yet.  He’ll be here in April 2016!
