CASE STUDY:  World’s largest freehand GreenGraffiti (reverse graffiti) mural at Globetrotter in Hamburg

When:  June 2014

Client:  Keen Europe / GreenGraffiti

Mission:  Create an organic, “green” artistic mural in front of Keen’s largest retailer in Hamburg, Germany.  Illustrate Keen Footwear’s slogan of “follow your feet” and inspire others to get outdoors!

SCOPE OF WORK:  Strategize and draw a visual of Keen’s “Follow your Feet” campaign.  Design the art for stencils and then apply the mural in freehand fashion, while onlookers enjoy watching.   Cover 100 square meters of sidewalk with the mural.

RESULTS:  Onlookers and media enjoyed watching the mural come to life.  Keen was able to get their message out in a green manner.  Globetrotter was extremely pleased, as their foot traffic increased, and the city of Hamburg received a “green” mural to enjoy for the month.   Mission Accomplished.

About GreenGraffiti-Drew Brophy Keen Project and the Process of Reverse Graffiti:

In the summer of 2013, Drew Brophy and GreenGraffiti, on behalf of Keen Europe, executed the world’s first and largest *reverse graffiti sidewalk mural at the Hamburg Globetrotter in Germany.  It was a huge success which resulted in a strong increase in sales for Keen Europe and Globetrotter.  The mural was over 100 meters square.  (See Video of project at bottom of post)

This year they decided to work with Drew live!  Similar idea but this time the art and interpretation of Keen’s philosophy of #FollowYourFeet will be applied freehand. It will be the world’s largest freehand template sidewalk mural.

The Process:  Drew designs and draws the artwork for the templates and overall design.  GreenGraffiti takes the designs and cuts giant templates (stencils) out of steel and recycled materials.  Together they will freehand the design on location, using giant “airbrush” power washers, working with the dirt on the sidewalk.

Only a handful of illustrators in the world know these techniques of creating, designing and executing the art for such a project.  Drew is one of the few artists who has mastered this technique and process.

Once applied, the design stays for about 4 weeks, then GreenGraffiti goes out and clears it, leaving a shiny, clean sidewalk for the community to enjoy!

In the words of Jim Bowes of GreenGraffiti, “Dirty public space is a valuable public asset” !
