Today’s Painting is the 10th of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled 1111,  11″ x 14″ on Canvas board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

For the past few years I’ve been seeing number 11:11 constantly.  I’ll just look down at my clock, and it will read 11:11, or I’ll see it in something else.

Some say that 11:11 is a Master number and that seeing it frequently creates synchronicities in your life.  Seeing it reminds me to pay attention and enjoy the simple things in life.

This is a rich man in the painting; he’s free to dream on the beach without a care in the world.  Focus on what is important, what is real, change is coming.

Life is Good,

Drew

Today’s Painting is the 9th of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled THE KEY IS TO LISTEN,  11″ x 14″ on Canvas board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

This is about the idea of being connected to the world and the Universe and all things in it.  By listening, I don’t mean with your ears or seeing with your eyes.   I mean being connected in a way that the human race has forgotten.

I feel that everything is alive, full of energy and in some ways if we could just learn to tap into it, we would be able to understand much more.   And with that understanding comes clarity about what’s really important in life.

Too many people are so pre-occupied with things in the fake world that they detach from the natural world.

As an artist and a surfer, I want to tap into the energy of the natural world.  I’ve learned to listen and notice the subtleties and I’m getting better at it.  The more I tap out of the fake world, the more in tuned to the natural world I become.

Life is Good,  Drew

Fall Camp Out at Uppers 20x20 PAINTING 12 x 16 canvas board by Drew Brophy Sept 2013FOR THE NEXT 20 DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

Today’s Painting is the 8th of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled FALL CAMP OUT AT UPPERS,  12″ x 16″ on Canvas board, medium Uni Poscas Paint Pens.

I saw a photo of a giant bonfire on the beach.  It reminded me of the kind that you have as a kid, and you just throw every log you can find on it.

It was cool this morning, the first day of fall.   This time of year I love to spend the late afternoons surfing until the sun goes down. Sometimes we build fires to keep warm after being in the ocean.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could camp out at Upper Trestles and surf the first Northwest swells into the night?  With nothing but a huge bonfire to light the way…

The dream surfer in the painting represents all the great waves that have been ridden at Uppers.  He’s like a ghost-surfer in the sky.

I hope you like it.  Life is good,

Drew

Today’s Painting is the 7th of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled THE HALIBUT HOLE,  9″ x 12″ on Canvas board, medium Paint Pens.

I’m having a lot of fun painting these every day.  Painting on a small canvas is helping me to create a simpler style.  Thanks to everyone who has been watching this process unfold.

I like the energy in this one!

The inspiration behind The Halibut Hole:

There’s a secret spot in San Clemente called The Halibut Hole.  Standup paddleboarders have been paddling out there and catching giant halibut.

The water was super clear today, it’s almost unfair, because you can see the halibut laying on the bottom, they’re so big.

Life is good in San Clemente!

Night Scene with Comet Ison painting by Drew Brophy 6x8 paint pen on canvas board Sept 2013 20x20challengeFOR THE NEXT 20 DAYS, I’M CREATING 20 ORIGINAL ART PIECES that reflect my thought process and where my ideas originate from.

Today’s Painting is the 6th of 20 in this #20×20 Series, titled NIGHT SCENE WITH COMET ISON,  6″ x 8″ on Canvas board, medium Paint Pens.

Every morning, during this #20×20 Series process, I begin the day thinking about what I’m going to paint, and what size canvas or board to paint on.   This one is the smallest size of the series so far.

I’m always surprised when people don’t know about Comet Ison.  It came from deep space  and it’s visiting our solar system for a brief period of time.

I’ve been watching it for the past year, as it passes all the planets.  Right now it’s traveling past Mars and is about to pass below earth, then towards the sun, where it will begin to be super-heated and emit a huge cloud of debris, which will be lit up by the sun, in late November.

Nobody knows for sure how bright Comet Ison will be, but some say that it will be the brightest thing anyone has ever seen in the sky, brighter than the full moon.

Imagine sitting on the beach with a bonfire, watching the brightest thing that man has ever seen in the sky!  These are the things that inspired the very thought of God…

Scientists say it’s clouds of dust may glow in a brilliant blue as we pass through the tail of it in late December.  What a show this might be!  I’ll be watching – will you?

Life is Good,

Drew

Today’s Painting is the 5th of 20, titled THE PIER,  11″ x 14″ on Canvas board, medium Uni Posca Paint Pens.

It’s Saturday, and I thought I’d go down to the pier in San Clemente to paint today’s painting.  I sat under the palapa on the beach and painted while friends came by to watch and say hello.

Today reminded me of a fall day.  The weather is changing and it made me think of the North West swells that will soon begin to filter in.  That’s when San Clemente pier really lights up; the right going into the pier turns into a big tube while the current pushes you away.  I can’t wait for those days to start!

Within 5 minutes of posting a photo of this painting in progress on Facebook, we got an email from Maria’s friend Kat.  She bought it before it was even finished.  That’s having faith in the process.

Please, leave me a comment and let me know what you think of this painting.

Today’s Painting is the 4th of 20, titled FEELING FREE Triptych Three pieces each 8″ x 6″ (total size 8″ x 18″) on Canvas board, medium Uni Posca Paint Pens.

I think this painting would make a great t-shirt design!

On the #20×20 Commitment:  I’m not trying to create masterpieces, I’m just trying to execute a cool painting every day, using different techniques and ideas, or both.

It’s been fun trying new things, for example, with this painting.  I’m playing with color and not adding so much detail.  I’m letting the color create cool effects.  Some of these effects are inspired by artist Bill Ogden, who has a fantastic style.

Yesterdays painting TUNING INTO THE UNIVERSE was my experiment with stretching a strange concept, and executing the idea.  The first two paintings were a direct inspiration from being at the Hurley Pro surfing contest.

Today, I wanted to do a small painting, but only one 8″ x 6″ canvas board seemed too small, so I decided to grab three of them.  I’ve painted triptychs on surfboards before, but never on small canvas boards.  It’s a challenge for me to paint this small.

At the end of my #20×20, I plan to post all the paintings and ask people to choose their favorites and what they want to see more of.

This is a good experiment for me.  Thanks for being a part of it.

Please, leave me a comment and let me know what you think I should paint next!

Today’s Painting is the 3rd of 20, titled TUNING INTO THE UNIVERSE 18x 24 on Canvas, Uni Posca Paint Pens.

This painting is a little different  for me – I’m transitioning my art into another area that I’m really interested in, which is the science of energy, vibrations and waves.  This painting captures some of that.

Understanding that waves are everything – light, energy, vibrations;  I think surfers are more in tune to the Universe then most people.
There’s something about riding waves that taps you into the energy of the Universe.I painted this to illustrate the idea behind that.
I hope you like it.

Kolohes Air painting by Drew Brophy Sept 2013 at Hurley Pro Lowers Trestles Contest

Today’s Painting is the First of 20, titled KOLOHE’S AIR 11 x 14 on Canvas Board, Uni Posca Paint Pens.

This morning I wanted to sit and paint on the beach as I watched the Hurley Pro Surfing contest at Lower Trestles.

I was so inspired by Kolohe Andino’s air, as he surfed against Taj Burrows, that I had to paint it!

When Kolohe was only 2 years old and I was working at the old …Lost shop in San Clemente, his dad Dino brought him in to check out the surfboard factory.

Painting on the Beach at Hurley Pro, Trestles

Painting on the Beach at Hurley Pro, Trestles

I dipped young Kolohe’s feet in blue tempera paint and let him walk on his dad’s Lost surfboard, decorating the deck.  It looked cool.  But,  I think his mom got mad that I got paint all over her baby!

Now, many years later, I proudly watch this local San Clemente kid tearing it up on the ASP World Tour.

Kolohe didn’t win his heat this morning, but, his air was sick.

Hope you enjoy it!
