Behind the Scenes…

SoBe NO WAY DOWN Caption Campaign Sept 2014CASE STUDY: Sobe “Caption this” Painted Surfboard Social Media Campaign

CLIENT:  ThinkMotive Agency

WHEN:  September 2014

MISSION/SCOPE OF WORK:  Create an eye-popping piece of art, on a surfboard, to be given away as a prize for SoBe’s surfboard social media “Caption This” campaign on Facebook.

The surfboard was painted by Drew, live, during a meet and greet event at BC Surf Shop.

The artwork is a collaboration between Drew Brophy and professional surfer Sebastian “Seabass” Zeitz, painted during the Hurley Pro Surf Event.

Many fans showed up at the meet and greet and watched as Drew painted the surfboard and Seabass signed posters.  All enjoyed cold, delicious samples of SoBe in many flavors.

When the surfboard was painted, photos went on social media and SoBe fans were invited to submit their caption for the photo (shown above).  The best caption was chosen.

RESULTS:  Many fans engaged in the contest; a happy winner was shipped the painted surfboard.  SoBe did a cool thing.  Mission Accomplished!

“I had the privilege of collaborating with Drew Brophy for a meet and greet event my brand was hosting in San Clemente.  Maria and Drew both were flexible with scheduling, professional, and extremely easy to partner with. For someone not connected to the surfing scene, Maria took the time to explain to me the details and brought her own creativity to the mix. Drew has the ability to easily generate a vision in his head and transfer that to his work….truly amazing.”  Brad Burns Sr. Account Manager, Think Motive

Embellishing RADIOACTIVE art print by Drew Brophy and Black Core StudiosI rarely do collaborations, and I never sell limited edition art prints.

But when skull artist Paul Crabtree, out of U.K.’s Black Core Studios, asked me to collaborate on a skull art piece for a limited edition of 25, I said, “why not?”

And I’m stoked on how it turned out!

This art piece, titled RADIOACTIVE, elicits a huge response from everyone who sees it.

It’s printed on 30″ x 30″ gallery-wrapped canvas, and I’m hand-embellishing some of them.

Only 25 are being sold; this is the first limited edition I’ve done in many, many years.

(They are almost sold out)

To order yours before they are all gone, call 949-678-8133, or order online at RADIOACTIVE LIMITED EDITION ART CANVAS.

A CELEBRATION OF SURF AND ART; WHAT DOES SURFING MEAN TO YOU!

Drew’s work as an artist takes him all over the world, partnering with communities to paint murals and create art inspired projects.

Now, Drew wants to combine the love for art, and San Clemente’s love of surfing, right here in his home town, during the Hurley Pro contest (the biggest, authentic surf event of the WCT)

Drew has put together a week-long celebration of Art & Surf for our community right here in San Clemente!

For 6 days, Drew will be painting a “movable mural”, 18 feet long, at different locations in town.  (2 of the locations have Brophy Poster Give-aways – See locations at bottom of this post)

MAKE AND TAKE:  The week will finish with an afternoon of “Painting with Drew” at San Clemente Art Supply Store.

It’s open to the public, and it’s free, thanks to the the generosity of Fredrix Canvas and SC Art Supply.  Bring your family and expose them to an afternoon of painting and creativity, for free!

This event coincides with the Hurley Pro surfing event, and the North Beach Art Walk.   On Friday, after you enjoy creating your own art, you can stroll the art walk.

During the week, Drew will be painting live and asking you to share “what is surfing” to you!  Your answer to that question is an entry into a drawing to win one of the Drew Brophy canvas art prints that will be given away on Friday, Sept 12, at SC Art Supply.

We hope you’ll join us, talk story, and tell us what surfing means to you!

Los Cabos Surfboard with Winner Coco Ho in Los Cabos Open of Surfing 2014CASE STUDY:  Los Cabos Open of Surf #CaboSurfSelfie Campaign Los Cabos Surfboard Promotion for Tourism Board by Drew Brophy May 2014

When:  May/June 2014

Client:  CIIC Agency for Los Cabos Tourism Board (Mexico)

Mission:  Drew Brophy to design and paint a “Los Cabos Surf” branded surfboard as fine art, for the promotion of the 2nd annual Los Cabos Open of Surf tournament event.  The Los Cabos Tourism Board and its AOR Carolyn Izzo Integrated Communications (CIIC) took it to the streets in three key US feeder markets.

SCOPE OF WORK:  Strategize and paint a visual of the lifestyle of surf and leisure in Los Cabos, with the finished product “fine art ready” for the winner of the women’s Los Cabos Surfing contest to take home.

The Los Cabos surfboard traveled throughout California, New York and Mexico City.  CIIC street teams invited people to take a selfie with the board and post it on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter with the hashtag #CaboSurfSelfie. Those with public profiles were entered to win a trip to Los Cabos.

RESULTS:   25,000 to 30,000 people attended the tournament, up 30% compared 2013!

The contest drew more than 200 entries.  Between May 10 and June 17 the campaign drove more than 1 million impressions on the board of tourism’s Facebook page (with a reach of nearly 500,000 unique users); more than 431,500 Twitter impressions (with a reach of more than 255,000 unique users); and more than 2,000 Instagram likes.

Two earned stories ran – segments on WABC-TV in California and on Unvision’s Despierta San Diego. The board also appeared several times in crowd shots on Good Morning America on May 27.

Mission Accomplished.

Keen Green Graffiti Logo Hamburg by Drew

It’s exciting.  I can see it in my head, and I can’t finish it fast enough….It’s a simple process of positive and negative space. ”  Drew Brophy

CASE STUDY:  World’s largest freehand GreenGraffiti (reverse graffiti) mural at Globetrotter in Hamburg

When:  June 2014

Client:  Keen Europe / GreenGraffiti

Mission:  Create an organic, “green” artistic mural in front of Keen’s largest retailer in Hamburg, Germany.  Illustrate Keen Footwear’s slogan of “follow your feet” and inspire others to get outdoors!

SCOPE OF WORK:  Strategize and draw a visual of Keen’s “Follow your Feet” campaign.  Design the art for stencils and then apply the mural in freehand fashion, while onlookers enjoy watching.   Cover 100 square meters of sidewalk with the mural.

RESULTS:  Onlookers and media enjoyed watching the mural come to life.  Keen was able to get their message out in a green manner.  Globetrotter was extremely pleased, as their foot traffic increased, and the city of Hamburg received a “green” mural to enjoy for the month.   Mission Accomplished.

VIDEO:  This short video shows the process and tells the story:  Keen GreenGraffiti and Drew Brophy in Hamburg.

(GreenGraffiti is known for their “Green Advertising.” Working with some of the most popular global brands, GreenGraffiti has turned advertising into art.)

*REVERSE GRAFFITI is also known as clean tagging, dust tagging, grime writing. GreenGraffiti or “clean advertising” is a method of creating temporary or semi-permanent images on walls or other surfaces by removing dirt from a surface using giant power washers and stencils.

Drew Brophy and the WD Fan Night Mural Painting CES2014“It’s important for me to be able to interact with every single person at an event.  I want them to leave feeling happy and with a lasting memory of what a great time they had.”  Drew Brophy

CASE STUDY:  Western Digital CES 2014 Fan Night Event

WHEN:  January 2014

CLIENT:  Western Digital (WD)

Mission:  Help make WD Fan Night event during CES2014 Las Vegas a memorable evening for WD’s special guests.

SCOPE OF PROJECT:

MURAL for Display:  Design, create and paint a Mural sized 10′ x 6′  (painted over 5 custom-made canvas pieces for ease of transport)

GIVEAWAY PROMOTIONAL ITEMS:  Drew Brophy Design was provided for WD t-shirts and posters to give away to guests at event

GIVEAWAY BIG TICKET ITEMS:  Strategiclaly design and then hand paint five (5) fine art pieces on skateboard decks.    The art design on the decks represented each of WD’s five hard drive products.   The decks were given away to five lucky winners at the event.

LIVE POSTER SIGNING:  Drew attended the event alongside other celebrities present, signed posters and presented the skate decks to each winner.

RESULTS:  WD Fan Night was a memorable event; dozens of guests took their photos in front of the mural and every guest happily took home a piece of art (poster) to always remind them of the evening.  WD was extremely pleased with the ease of the logistics to pull this off, and with the final outcome.

Mission Accomplished!

DETAILS:  Mural Artwork:  WD wanted a surf painting in Drew’s traditional style, with symbolism that was relevant to their products, which is hard drives.  Hard drives hold things that you want to keep forever.

Drew says of his design for the mural, “When I think of things that last forever, I think of ancient times and things that were made in stone.  In a way, hard drives hold information that is saved and passed down.  All of my art is saved on hard drives; it’s like my safety deposit box.  The art will be passed down to my son, and his kids as well.  So in this painting, the character is carving a WD in stone.”

Skateboard Deck Paintings: Drew created five paintings, meant to represent the features of each of WD’s hard drives; the explanation can be found in the name of the painting – see below:

Scott SMallin photo of his Drew Brophy SATURN CUBES painting April 2014SATURN CUBES 36” x 24” mixed media on canvas.

This was painted for South Carolina photographer Scott Smallin.

We hire Scott to photograph my projects when we are in the South.  As a thank you for the excellent work he does, I offered to create an original painting for him.

Scott said that he wanted a robot destroying a city  I pondered this idea, of a robot destroying a city, with a mushroom cloud or transformers.  But that didn’t feel right to me.

So I asked myself “What is something that is real that is destroying the world?  What if there is an ideaology and a secret that is really destroying it?

I took this idea deeper.

The painting shows the battle between good and evil, with many symbols; the robot is a black cube, controlling all of the material world, spreading evil until it self-destructs into a mushroom cloud.

It’s the death of the material world, which ultimately has no effect on the spiritual world.  The spiritual world has infinite power for good.

The water represents good extinguishing evil. This painting is about the battle over information throughout time; it is about control over the information of who we really are.

The light beings show that we are pure energy. Our hearts are the engine that makes the electrical connection to everything.  It’s what holds us here in space and time.

My passion is in ancient cultures.  I study that along with sacred geometry and the meaning behind ancient symbols and new theories in physics.

The reason I chose Saturn and the Cubes as evil, is because my research shows that this is something that people in the ancient worlds were worshipping.  They couldn’t even see Saturn; how did they know it was there?

The reason the symbol is a cube is because there is a cube shape on the Northern pole of Saturn.

Another ancient symbol is the ring of Saturn; some speculate that the “all seeing eye” is what Saturn looks like during an eclipse.  They said that Saturn is the timekeeper and that you’re trapped in a prison of time and space.

I view the world differently than most people.  Some don’t want to see it the way I do, because it’s scary.

We are born into a system that is controlled by power and greed and information.  The average person has a very hard time bucking the system.  Essentially, we are all born a slave.  Most people that are a part of the system don’t even realize that they are.

Some people don’t know that they don’t have to do what they are doing.  They don’t have to live where they grew up; they can leave!  They don’t have to keep that job they hate; they can quit.  They don’t have to do anything that is toxic to them.

I believe that in ancient times we had it right; people knew how to live with joy and happiness.  At some point we lost that and the darkness came.

Now, things are changing again.  I see people waking up and rediscovering what’s really important and who they really are.

The world is experiencing a positive transformation right now.  I see it in myself, too.

Life is Good,

Drew

Drew Brophy Surfing Todos Santos Photo by Lonnie Ryan Excerpt from interview:

“I started looking into art schools, but I couldn’t get the money together. With no other way out, I said, ‘that’s it, I’m going to go surf these waves’.

That set me on my path of a kind of stubbornness to spite the system that let me down.  I had no other alternative. I asked myself, ‘If I died today, what would I have been bummed to not have done? “

I feel honored to be interviewed by the well known “outdoors gear” guide, GearJunkie.com, this week.

The interview was focused on how I built a lifestyle around my art that allows me to travel and adventure around the word.

We talked about how surfing big waves at Puerto Escondido lead to my art career in the early days;

and how people think we’re rich when they see my family and I travel several months out of the year;

and a lot more.

Check out the article here:  BRIDGING ART & ADVENTURE 14 QUESTIONS WITH DREW BROPHY.

I hope you enjoy it.

Life is Good,

Drew

Drew Brophy and painted skateboard deck with posca paint pens photo by Scott Smallin 2014

A long time ago I understood that I bear some responsibility for what I put out into the world.

POSCA LIFE CUSTOM did an interview with me.

They referred to me as the “Godfather of Surf Art” – which is a huge compliment, but I don’t agree.  Many great artists in surf came before me; there’s a toss up between who could claim that title (Rick Griffin, Bill Ogden, etc.)

They asked very good questions, ones that I don’t usually get, like:

“I read somewhere that you weren’t into the Surf Industry Club…” and “Do you think surf culture needs more artists?” and “You have a lot of eyes on you…“.

Below are a few questions from the interview.  To read the entire thing, go to their webpage here:  Drew Brophy Posca Life Interview

Posca Life:  * Do you remember your first drawings on surfboard?

I painted my first surfboard when I was 4 or 5 years old, with crayons. I wrote my name on it.* You are from South Carolina, is there a surf culture there?

* You are from South Carolina, is there a surf culture there?

Yes, there was a surf culture there. South Carolina was a great place to grow up. The water in the summer is 85 degrees (F) and the small waves were perfect for learning how to surf. I was lucky there were a lot of nice people surfing, and there were a few small surf shops.

* You are a surfer first, and you traveled a lot, it has been inspiration for your art?

I feel lucky being a surfer, because surfing has taken me to some of the most remote places in the world.  Not many people get to go to these places. The travel absolutely inspires my art. There is something great and beautiful about every place; they are all great.

* A lot of people got eyes on you…

I’m always amazed that people know who I am. I’m not sure if it’s the art or my lifestyle, or just being authentic.

A long time ago I understood that I bear some responsibility for what I put out into the world.

Everyone does. Knowing that I’m being watched makes me want to contribute in a positive way. I try to help people as much as I can, to encourage young people to know that they can create a good life for themselves.

* You are dedicated in your job and family, what could be your next achievement?

I just want to chase big waves around the world. I want to ride them. I want to tell stories about them and the people I rode them with. I want to spend time with the locals at each place and learn all about them. Ireland is the next place I want to go.
