I’ve been painting a lot of surfboards lately. 

I love it because it’s where I started with art 30 years ago – and it takes me around the world surfing and meeting cool people.

In September I traveled Indonesia, surfing and painting boards.  That surf trip evolved into a month-long Posca painting workshop party!   

Everywhere I went, people asked me to show them how to paint with Posca Paint Pens.  Kids, surfers, old guys, everyone was joining in on painting.

I’ll tell you more about Indo later, but for now, I want to tell you about my online Posca surfboard painting courses and WHY I’m giving away my painting process in both a FREE  intro version as well as an in-depth PAID version.

It’s because I love sharing the stoke of art, and I know without a doubt that the Posca painting process that I use can literally change people’s lives. 

My goal has always been to share my process with everyone who wants it.

But, there was one problem and that was:  how could I reach ALL the people that want to know how?

For years I’ve had people ask a ton of questions about painting boards:

  • How do you prepare the surface before painting?
  • What’s the best medium to paint a surfboard?  
  • How do I find ideas for my sketch?
  • How do you seal the painting so it never washes off the surfboard? 
  • What sealer do you use?

There are so many peeps asking questions that I stopped trying to answer them one-on-one because it’s not possible to answer hundreds of questions a week.

And then my wife Maria and I figured out HOW to reach all of those people:  we invested in a film crew and a new website and we created a very in-depth video course on How to Paint A Surfboard.  It took months to develop and now you can get it here.

BUT, we found that sometimes people aren’t ready to dive totally in and take the course, they just want one question answered.

So, then I developed something for those who aren’t ready to invest in a complete course:  a FREE INTRO to painting a surfboard – a 14 day e-mail course that gives the basics.  You can access that HERE.

We are very happy to announce that the Franklin G. Burroughs • Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, S.C. is curating a Drew Brophy Retrospective Exhibition the summer of 2018. 

Many of Drew’s collectors are graciously loaning their Brophy paintings for the exhibition, and for that, we are very grateful.

MAKING WAVES – A Drew Brophy Retrospective

Franklin G. Burroughs Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – June 23rd through September 16 2018.

This is the first museum exhibition devoted to the full scope of the career of Drew Brophy, considered to be one of the most prolific surf inspired artists in history.    Brophy began his art career in his hometown of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The exhibition presents an opportunity to study the artist’s development over three decades, beginning with his early illustration works as a teenager, to his surfboard painting explosion in the 1990’s, and onto his illustrated career designing everything under the sun in action sports.  There will also be an introduction into the current fine art paintings inspired by Drew’s love for nature and physics.

The exhibition includes over fifty original art pieces and will occupy Myrtle Beach Art Museum’s entire first floor gallery space, totaling approximately 1,700 square feet.

Brophy’s retrospective includes paintings, drawings, sketches and surfboards.  Included in the exhibition are the artist’s most iconic paintings—among them Pure Joy (2001), Sunrise (2006), and celebrated surfboard triptychs from the 1990’s.  Also exhibited will be Brophy’s art on skateboards, wakeboards and apparel, and the accompanying paintings that were used to design them.

Brophy’s career as an illustrator and painter comes full circle in this upcoming exhibition, as he is bringing his art that he created around the world, back home again.

Brophy’s unique style of artwork has inspired thousands of artists to take up painting, using his favorite mediums and emulating his distinct painting style.  (Some of the pieces on exhibit are available and can be acquired here.)

Drew Brophy and his wife Maria will be available at the exhibition for the first two weeks, leading several scheduled, guided tours.

You can paint anything with water based paint pens!  

Learn Drew Brophy’s tried and true Uni Posca Paint Pen Techniques in this hands-on workshop. 

Drew has earned a good living as an artist for over 30 years, using the medium of opaque, water-based paint pens made by Uni Posca.   He has painted surfboards, skateboards, motorcycles, guitars, canvas, just about everything, with this medium.

UNI POSCAS offer a quick learning curve; it’s an easy, un-intimidating method of painting.  Artists who try it fall in love with the possibilities of this medium.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This is a full day workshop, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break in between.   (Lunch is on your own – there are many places to eat within walking distance of the workshop.)  WORKSHOP IS ONLY OPEN TO TEN PEOPLE.

All painting supplies will be provided, all you need to bring is your imagination and your sketchbook (optional)! 

You will begin and finish a painting in this workshop, regardless of your experience level.  In one day, you will learn Drew’s most impactful techniques, including HOW TO: 

  • Prepare your painting surfaces
  • Create the perfect composition
  • Design color schemes
  • Blend the colors
  • Use Drew’s color blending combinations
  • Properly seal your art on various surfaces
  • Earn money $$ using these painting techniques

This is a rare opportunity for artists to spend time with Drew on a personal level.  This is his first hands-on private workshop in years.

Drew will welcome questions during the workshop about the business of art and will freely share what has worked for him as a professional artist for over 30 years.

JOIN US FOR A CELEBRATION OF SUMMER!  

An explosion of Drew’s colorful new paintings on canvas and surfboards will be exhibited at The Art Center Gallery in Westminster, CA, June 23 & 24, 2017.

We limit Drew’s art exhibits to two each year.  This is Drew’s first art exhibit of his surf art paintings of 2017.  New, never seen before paintings will be available to the public for the first time.  

Come join us for the following events:

Friday June 23rd:  5-9 p.m.   Art Exhibit and meet and greet with Drew.  See new original artworks never before exhibited, meet Drew and add a painting or a print reproduction to your art collection.

Saturday June 24th:   1-4 p.m. Drew will be doing a live painting at the Gallery.   Watch Drew do a painting from start to finish, using Posca paint pens.   We will be shooting a Facebook Live Video while he paints, so if you can’t be there live, tune into Facebook here.

WHEN: September 2016

CLIENT: Delve Texas (on behalf of IBM)

MISSION: Generate interest and attract people to the IBM booth at VM World, in a unique manner.

SCOPE OF WORK:  Create artwork in a tropical theme that illustrates IBM’s cloud products and then paint it, LIVE,  in one day on a surfboard during VM World in Las Vegas.  The live painting was one part of a surfboard “exhibit” at the VM World booth, as decoration to enhance their tropical theme.

MEDIUM:  The entire painting was done using water-based paint pens, which are non-messy, have no smell and take up very little space.

LIVE:  One great advantage to a live painting event is that I can get the crowd involved.  I encouraged many of the attendees tdrew-brophy-curse-mackey-raleigh-melancon-at-vm-world-ibm-booth-surfboardso try out the paint pens on the surfboard.  It’s fun for them and creates a fun, relaxing atmosphere, which helps IBM people to connect with them as well.  It was a memorable day for many people there.  IBM was incredibly pleased, as was Delve Texas.

Collage of Drew Brophy SC Art Fredrix Canvas Event Photos by Jonie PhotoI’m always traveling and doing art projects in other parts of the world.  I wanted to do something cool with my local community in San Clemente, with the idea of inspiring kids (young and old) to get creative, paint, and have fun with it.

I teamed up with Fredrix Canvas, SC Art Supply and Uni Posca for a “Paint with Drew” day, last Friday.

Fredrix Canvas makes the best quality and variety of canvas out there. They have all types for artists to be creative.  Their large canvas panels are perfect for my move-able mural paintings.   I paint on them with paint pens and spray paint; they always come out great.

Last September I painted 20 paintings in 20 days; they were all painted on Fredrix Canvas.

This year, I wanted to see what people can do with Fredrix’s new, awesome “black canvas”.  The black canvas works great with the bright colors I like to paint with.

Fredrix donated a generous supply of black canvas for the event, SC Art Supply hosted the event, and Uni Posca donated paint pens.

We invited the public to come out and paint, and they showed up in droves.

Some kids came and wouldn’t leave; they were having too much fun painting.  It was so cool for me to see their enthusiasm for art.

One teenager showed up with a painting he did on canvas, inspired by my style.

Local professional artist Lauren Tannehill showed up with her family, we saw San Clemente business owners and surfers and skaters and everything in between.

It was an awesome day!

CASE STUDY:  World’s largest freehand GreenGraffiti (reverse graffiti) mural at Globetrotter in Hamburg

When:  June 2014

Client:  Keen Europe / GreenGraffiti

Mission:  Create an organic, “green” artistic mural in front of Keen’s largest retailer in Hamburg, Germany.  Illustrate Keen Footwear’s slogan of “follow your feet” and inspire others to get outdoors!

SCOPE OF WORK:  Strategize and draw a visual of Keen’s “Follow your Feet” campaign.  Design the art for stencils and then apply the mural in freehand fashion, while onlookers enjoy watching.   Cover 100 square meters of sidewalk with the mural.

RESULTS:  Onlookers and media enjoyed watching the mural come to life.  Keen was able to get their message out in a green manner.  Globetrotter was extremely pleased, as their foot traffic increased, and the city of Hamburg received a “green” mural to enjoy for the month.   Mission Accomplished.
