The best part about being a father is making my son happy. Every year we build his Halloween costume. It usually takes a couple weeks and we go all out.  All of this for a few hours of fun, but a lifetime of memories and lessons.  I hope I am teaching him to dream big, that anything is possible.  He comes up with the ideas, we sketch them out, and we start to decide what is going to work. It needs to be cheap, light, and effective. We use a lot of scraps from around the surfboard factories and materials from my studio.  Dylan comes up with the best ideas. The Terminator costume cost around $40 and a lot of time together with my son. I can not wait for next Halloween. Drew

I’ve always loved Chris Lundy’s work.  As a teenager, I would be in awe of seeing his artwork in magazines, on posters for Quiksilver, and other illustrations.

Then I moved to the North Shore of Hawaii, and  life was tough. (more…)

ARTIST SHOOTQuestion from Alexa Case:  “I have an unglassed blank and i’m going to paint it (with acrylic) and I was told I couldn’t do it on the stringer. but your boards are painted over the stringer.  Did you just do it on top of the first coat of glass (I was planning on painting on the foam) ?”

When I used to airbrush and sponge-paint boards, most people asked to have their stringer (more…)

The painting of a Helmet

The painting of a Helmet

Paul Cotton wrote this question: “I received your dvd and paint pens for xmas and the dvd got me inspired. I was wondering before you paint a motorcyle helmet how do you prep it?”

Well, Paul, here’s the simplified version:

1.) Remove everything from the helmet (screws, padding, insides, etc.) Some rubber parts on some helmets won’t come off – in that case, tape them off.
