Drew Brophy to graffiti vintage VW bus for two-day live demonstration in Huntington Beach during U.S. Open of Surf

(Huntington Beach, CA) — The Verizon FiOS SoCal campaign and professional surf lifestyle artist, Drew Brophy are teaming up to influence SoCal residents to conquer their creativity.

Drew will use graffiti-style spray paint and airbrush to customize the vintage Verizon FiOS SoCal 1965 Volkswagen bus, LIVE, in Huntington Beach during US Open of Surf Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. daily.

Visitors can watch as Drew transforms the VW bus, and even win a Lost surfboard, custom painted by Drew Brophy.  Brophy will be executing his live artistry on the Strand, between 5th and Pacific Coast Highway.

Drew-Brophy-artists-painting-van-airbrushThis live art installation is part of the Verizon FiOS SoCal campaign’s “Conquer Creativity” initiative, which offers locals a unique opportunity to design and win SoCal staples.  Participants can virtually design graphics for a beach bike, skate or surfboard, and enter those designs in the sweepstakes.  With a unique, computer-based design template, users can integrate colors, personal photos and text into their designs.

Each week, one sweepstakes entry will be randomly selected, and the winner will receive the item he or she entered – a surfboard, skateboard or beach cruiser – with graphics inspired by their design.  The winning sweepstakes items will be custom-made by local craftsmen.

For more than 25 years, Brophy’s bright, colorful art has appeared in hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers and on numerous products, including Converse Shoes, Nirve Cruiser Bikes and Liquid Force Wakeboards.

Having the freedom to experiment with many different surfaces and products allowed Brophy to grow tremendously as an artist.  Brophy’s artistic inspiration comes from surfing and traveling the globe with his wife and son.

Drew, signing posters at 2012 event

Drew will be signing posters (free) at PANHE Event in San Clemente from 1:00 – 2:30 on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

PANHE is a sacred Native American land in San Clemente.  Every year during Earth Day, there is a Panhe Earth Day Celebration held at the San Mateo Campground in San Clemente.

Panhe, which translates to “place by the water,” is an ancient Acjachemen village whose site is estimated to be about 9,500 years old. PANHE continues to be used as both a spiritual and ceremonial site.

Each year during Panhe Celebration, the natives from this land come together to share their ancient stories with the public, with the goal to inspire a love of the land and the desire to protect it, in everyone.

In 2011, Drew painted his rendition of Panhe after attending the awesome event.  Once again this year, the San Onofre Foundation, who puts on the Panhe Celebration, is using the artwork for their posters and advertisements.

Drew-Brophy-WHAM-O-Boogie-Boards-600x450 ssCASE STUDY:

Revitalize WHAM O’s Boogie Boards utilizing Drew Brophy art & packaging

WHEN:

2001 through 2008

CLIENT:

Wham O Toy Company

MISSION:

REVITALIZE existing Boogie Board products; make them authentic enough to be accepted by surf shop retailers.

Wham O sales people had a problem in early 2000;  they couldn’t convince core surf shops to carry their Morey Boogie Boards.  Surf shop owners wanted authentic surf style products, and most felt that the Morey Boogie Boards weren’t “core” enough for surf shop clientele.

Drew designed a complete line of Morey Boogie Boards, which bore his name.  Immediately, sales sky rocketed.  Surf shops began carrying the new Boogie Board line.  In less than 3 years, the Brophy-line of Boogie Boards were sold en-mass throughout the world.

RESULTS:  According to Wham O designer, Petey Peterson, the Brophy-line of Boogie Boards stand out as the most successful body boards that ever retailed, in history, to date.  Mission Accomplished!

Testimonial from Wham O’s Morey Boogie Board designer Petey Peterson:

Drew’s art defined our best-selling line of Liquid Force Wakeboards called the Trip Series back in 1996.

We worked together for years, building an amazing range of Morey Boogie Boards (for Wham O) that featured Drew’s original concepts and unique background effects. These stand out as the most successful body boards that ever retailed – EVER.

It is not a coincidence that Drew is the leading artist in today’s surf and skate scene. His art is like gold.  He is the Real Deal and I am blessed to have had the pleasure to work with him through these last two centuries!”  Michael “Petey” Peterson, Designer

3 Dot Magazine Dec 21, 2012 Issue

“Welcome to the beginning to the end….

We begin this issue with an interview with Surf Artist Drew Brophy, the Twilight Saga’s Sexy New Vampire: Judi Shekoni, Q&A with Artist Ian Ward, Q&A with Actor Mem Ferda, Review of the film Musical Chairs, Interview with artist Bill Strydesky, Review of Cursive’s I Am Gemini…”

Drew Brophy was interviewed by Don Perry and photographed by Scott Smallin of 3 Dot Magazine, when visiting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in fall of 2012.

We first heard of the famed photographer Scott Smallin in the year 2000, when Drew and I got married at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach.  Scott was one of the team of photographers that we hired for our wedding!

Now, over twelve years later, we find ourselves back in Myrtle Beach, this time to paint a large mural.

And, once again we are being shot by Scott Smallin, this time for 3 Dot Magazine!

Funny how life brings you ’round in circles.

Here’s how the 3 Dot Magazine Drew Brophy story begins:

DREW BROPHY IS THE SURF LIFESTYLE:

Drew Brophy, the surfer, the artist, the husband, the father, the teacher, and the list goes on…

Drew talks about how he created a life of art, surf and travel and what it takes to be a professional artist.

He explains how he beat all odds, and proved his high school guidance counselor wrong when she told him that “you can’t just surf and paint your whole life!”

Here is a video interview from 3 Dot Magazine, with Drew Brophy on location in Myrtle Beach, SC, at the Lulu’s Cafe Mural.

Drew Brophy, Chilling on the Grand Canyon

Drew had always wanted to be featured in the famed SURFERS JOURNAL, a beautiful full-color magazine that most people keep for years.

Though the Journal had at times contacted Drew over the years to feature his art, it somehow never materialized. Maybe one day, when Drew is old and grey and his art has truly “made it” they will do an art feature!

But for now, Drew’s stoked to have had his and Seth Warren’s Grand Canyon SUP Expedition featured in the Surfer’s Journal EXPEDITION REPORT.

The best part is that Drew’s friend, published author Chris Dixon, interviewed him for it.

If you want to pick up a copy, go to http://www.surfersjournal.com/ and look for Volume 21.5, Oct/Nov 2012 Edition.  Or, squint your eyes and see it below:

You can paint anything with water based paint pens!

He has painted surfboards, skateboards, motorcycles, guitars, canvas, everything with this medium.

  • Design color schemes

After this mural was painted, Drew and I both were exhausted, so much so that it took us a few weeks to get the photos together so we could post this!

Painting the biggest wave ever seen in Myrtle Beach! Day 10 of 13.

Thirteen days, 400 pounds of spray paint and a lot of Lulu’s Sandwiches fueled the painting of this mural!

Ian, mastering the bubbles

Ian Orsos, a local Myrtle Beach artist, helped Drew with moving the scaffolding, organizing the paints, and some of the painting, too.  We were lucky to have him!

Teamwork

Drew and Ian painted in the hot, sticky, South Carolina sun over a span of two weeks.

This was, without a doubt, the most publicized project we ever worked on.

It was featured on the evening tv news three times, in the Sun Newspaper twice and on the cover of The Herald News.  This project is also being written about in Grand Strand Magazine and on a number of online magazines, including The Digitel Myrtle Beach.
